Plebiscite on law dividing Maguindanao set Sept. 17
The Commission on Elections is set to conduct a plebiscite on Sept. 17, to know the pulse of the public on the recent law dividing Maguindanao province into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.
Comelec spokesperson Rex Laudiangco said the plebiscite had been delayed due to the recent May 9 local and national elections.
Laudiangco said the plebiscite is based on Republic Act 11550, which divided Maguindanao into two provinces.
He said the people in Maguindanao need to say yes or no if they support the division of the province into two.
Based on the law, the Maguindanao del Norte are made up of the towns of Barira, Buldon, Datu Blah Sinsuat, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Kabuntalan, Matanog, Northern Kabuntalan, Parang, North Upi, Sultan Kudarat, Sultan Mastura, Talitay and Datu Odin Sinsuat which will become the seat of power of the province.
The Maguindanao del Sur on the other hand will be composed of Ampatuan, Buluan, Datu Abdulla Sangki, Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Datu Montawal, Datu Paglas, Datu Piang, Datu Salibo, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Datu Unsay, Gen. Salipada K. Pendatun, Guindulungan, Mamasapano, Mangudadatu, Pagalungan, Paglat, Pandag, Rajah Buayan, Sharif Aguak, Sharif Saydona Mustafa, Sultan sa Barongis, Talayan, South Upi, and Buluan who will become the seat of power of the province.
The law dividing Maguindanao was enacted to spur more economic development in the area.
