BBM names DOTr Secretary-designate, other key post nominees

President-elect Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos, Jr. on Thursday named veteran airline executive Jaime "Jimmy" Bautista as Secretary-designate of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) along with other key nominees in his administration's transportation cluster.

Bautista, a Certified Public Accountant, worked at the country's flagship Philippine Airlines (PAL) for 25 years and was its President for a combined 13 years before retiring for the second time in 2019.

Bautista rose through the ranks of PAL, eventually becoming Vice President for Finance from 1993 to 1994, Chief Finance Officer from 1994 to 1999, Executive Vice President from 1999 to 2004, and President from 2004 to 2012, and from 2014 until 2019.

Marcos also named former Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) Deputy Administrator Cesar Chavez as Undersecretary-designate for Rails of the DOTr.

Chavez, who President Rodrigo Duterte appointed to the same post in 2017, was instrumental in securing the National Economic Development Authority Board's approval for the Metro Manila Subway, Philippine National Railway (PNR) Manila to Calamba, PNR Manila to Bicol, and the Tagum-Davao-Digos Mindanao rail projects.

Chavez is also credited for overseeing the interconnection of the LRT Line 1 in Monumento to MRT 3 in North Edsa, ensuring seamless travel for the passengers.

Before working in the transport sector, Chavez was Assistant General Manager for Planning of the Metro Manila Development Authority, Chairperson of the National Youth Commission (NYC), and youth sector Representative in the 9th Congress.

Meanwhile, veteran journalist and lawyer Atty. Cheloy E. Garafil, was nominated by Marcos as Chairperson-designate of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Garafil, currently a Service Director at the Committee on Rules of the House of Representatives, was a Prosecutor for the Department of Justice (DOJ) and State Solicitor for the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG).

She worked as a media practitioner for over a decade in various media organizations such as the Philippine Daily Globe, Central News Agency, Associated Press, and Malaya.

Garafil also holds a Master's degree in National Security Administration from the National Defense College and is a Philippine Air Force reservist with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

Rounding up President-elect Marcos' nominees for his transport cluster is Christopher "Chet" Pastrana, who will be General Manager-designate of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).

Pastrana, a successful businessman in the transportation field, brings with him decades of experience in various aspects of aviation, logistics, and public maritime transport.

A graduate of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, in 1987, Pastrana is currently the President and CEO of CAPP Industries, a supply and logistics conglomerate.

Pastrana is also the Chairman of Archipelago Philippines Ferries Corp. (APFC), which operates FastCat ferries, the sector's most recognizable and well-respected transport provider.

NGCP cancels yellow alert on Luzon Grid

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has canceled the yellow alert status on the Luzon Grid scheduled on Thursday afternoon, as demand was weaker than anticipated.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert would not be implemented “due to low actual system demand” as of 12:25 p.m. It did not elaborate.

The NGCP earlier announced that the yellow alert status would take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, due to the unplanned unavailable energy as several plants were placed on forced outage.

A yellow alert status indicates that the grid has thin reserves based on the difference between supply and demand, with total unplanned unavailable energy of 1,592 megawatts earlier on Thursday.

This comes amid the forced outage of the QPPL, SLPGC 1, SLPG 3, SLPG 4, GMEC 1, GMEC 2, and Calaca 2.

The NGCP is a privately-owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country's state-owned power grid. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/RSJ, GMA News

Fast-food chain Tropical Hut experiences renewed interest from Filipinos

After years in the shadows, the classic fast-food chain Tropical Hut is regaining popularity after being featured in a tweet that recently went viral.

Twitter user JP (@dumidyeypee) posted on Twitter his typical day of eating out at Tropical Hut in the Escolta branch, saying (at the time) he was the only customer at the said branch. The tweet garnered many likes, reactions, and tweets of other people reminiscing their moments eating at Tropical Hut. Some were even amazed at how affordable the meals were at this resto.

Following the viral tweet, Tropical Hut found itself gaining more and more attention and customers. Branches are now jam-packed with people dining in, or ordering for take-out or food delivery. Some branches have even reportedly been turning down customers due to the high volume of food delivery orders. In other Tropical Hut branches, stocks had run low due to the sudden increase in demand on their menu items.

A few days later, JP tweeted that Tropical Hut is expanding its team and is now open to hiring new employees.

This is full-on display of just how powerful social media is. With just a simple tweet, the fast-food chain that had seemingly been forgotten for years is now gaining renewed interest from Filipinos.

With a viral tweet having the power to bring back attention to an old establishment, we can definitely use the same social media power to grow interest for our other homegrown brands. There are other classic establishments that also deserve their earned media time, so people can enjoy revisiting them again–exactly like what happened to Tropical Hut.

Orange Brutus

Orange Brutus is the first-ever brand that brought hamburgers to Cebu. The burger joint offers not only hamburgers and shakes but also different rice meals. Currently, they have 19 locations around Cebu City.

Icebergs

Icebergs prides itself in being “the home of the Super Halo-Halo and Best Sisig in town” for almost 35 years. They currently have 13 branches as of March 2021, and continue to serve Filipino dishes and desserts to patrons.

Isetann Department Store

Before the explosion of lifestyle malls, and even way before malls became an established location for groceries and shopping, the go-to place of the people back then was Isetann Department Store located in Quiapo, Manila. Isetann still has a number of branches, with a lot of boutiques, stores, and restaurants. It also has cinemas! Isetann is still operating up to this day, and while definitely not as lifestyle-centric as some of the more prominent malls in the metro, many have pointed out how a lot of their price points are actually better than those from e-commerce sites. You can actually build a bedroom or living room showcase from their Home and Improvement section, at very competitive rates.
